History of HSBC in Japan

HSBC has a long history of commitment to business in Japan. A striking feature of this history is the way in which HSBC acted as a pioneer and prototype of banking and international finance in nineteenth-century Japan. During HSBC's own early development, Japan was a crucial market, with many of those bankers who served as local managers going on to forge distinguished and influential careers within the HSBC Group.
